The duo exhibition ‘Mate’ at Four Boxes Gallery – featuring sculptures by Biba Fibiger (DK) and Anica Kehr (DE) – is based on a chess performance on the opening night that determined the final set-up of the exhibition. Both artists were invited to create 16 sculptural works that acted as substitutes for chess pieces for the exhibition. Two players had control over how the exhibition would look, without actually making any aesthetic decisions. As they fought each other on the chessboard, the objects were correspondingly moved around the exhibition space according to the players’ moves and only the sculptures that “survived” the game would get a place in the final exhibition. Instead of collaborating, the works would fight each other, simultaneously writing and performing a choreography, recording temporary constellations and ultimately removing each other from the exhibition.
Biba Fibiger is a Danish artist living and working in Copenhagen. She graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2016. Her artistic practice addresses questions of language, the female body, abstraction and manifestos in sculptural assemblages.
Anica Kehr is a German artist living and working in Leipzig. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster and the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. In her work she explores a wide range of interests from natural phenomena, geological surfaces to Sci-fi utopias.
The exhibition ‘Mate’ is the first in an exhibition triology at Four Boxes Gallery curated by Gisa Pantel. The exhibitions explore the question of backstage, hidden power structures, control and hierarchy.
Duo-udstillingen “Mate” i Four Boxes Gallery – med skulpturer af Biba Fibiger (DK) og Anica Kehr (DE) – tager udgangspunkt i en skak-performance som på åbningsaftenen afgjorde udstillingens endelige opsætning. Begge kunstnere blev inviteret til at skabe 16 skulpturelle værker, som fungerede som substitutter for skakbrikker til udstillingen. To spillere havde magten over, hvordan udstillingen ville se ud, uden egentlig at tage nogle æstetiske beslutninger. Mens de bekæmpede hinanden på skakbrættet, blev objekterne tilsvarende flyttet rundt på udstillingsstedet i overensstemmelse med spillerenes træk og kun de skulpturer, der “overlevede” spillet, ville få en plads i den endelige udstilling. I stedet for at samarbejde ville værkerne bekæmpe hinanden, simultant skrive og udføre en koreografi, optage midlertidige konstellationer og ultimativt fjerne hinanden fra udstillingen.
Biba Fibiger er en dansk kunstner, der bor og arbejder i København. Hun afsluttede sin uddannelse på Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi i 2016. Hendes kunstneriske praksis forholder sig til spørgsmål om sprog, kvindekroppen, abstraktion og manifester i skulpturelle assemblage.
Anica Kehr er en tysk kunstner, der bor og arbejder i Leipzig. Hun har en uddannelse fra Academy of Fine Arts i Münster og fra Academy of Fine Arts i Düsseldorf. I sit arbejde undersøger hun en bred vifte af interesser fra naturfænomener, geologiske overflader til Sci-fi utopier.
Udstillingen “Mate” er den første i en udstillingstriologi i Four Boxes Gallery kurateret af Gisa Pantel. Udstillingerne undersøger spørgsmålet om “backstage”, skjulte magtstrukturer, kontrol og hierarki.
